The Caterpillar Communication Adapter 3 (CA3) is a device that allows communication between a computer and a Caterpillar engine or transmission control module (ECM or TCM). The CA3 can be used with various software applications, such as Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), Allison DOC, Cummins INSITE, and others. The CA3 can also perform firmware updates on itself and on the ECM or TCM.
The CA3 driver 1.9 is the latest version of the software that enables the CA3 to communicate with the computer and the software applications. How to install the CA3 driver 1.9
To install the CA3 driver 1.9, follow these steps:
Download the CA3 driver 1.9 from [this link].
Extract the zip file to a folder on your computer.
Connect the CA3 to your computer using a USB cable.
Open the Device Manager on your computer and locate the CA3 under Other devices or Ports (COM & LPT).
Right-click on the CA3 and select Update driver software.
Select Browse my computer for driver software and navigate to the folder where you extracted the zip file.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer if prompted.
After installing the CA3 driver 1.9, you should be able to use the CA3 with your software applications.
How to update the CA3 firmware
To update the CA3 firmware, follow these steps:
Connect the CA3 to your computer using a USB cable.
Connect the CA3 to an ECM or a TCM using an appropriate adapter cable and turn on the key switch of the engine or transmission.
Open the CAT Communication Adapter 3 Toolkit from your Start menu or desktop shortcut.
Select the middle Application Firmware Flash icon button which displays the options for firmware upgrades, or through Utilities - Reprogram CA3 menu.
Select a file to flash by clicking Select File, browse to (default: Program Files/ Program Files x86 - Caterpillar Inc - Comm Adapter 3 - Firmware) and select the file CA3_1.23.54.tar.bz2.
Click Open.
Click Begin to send the file.
The file transfer takes approximately 2 minutes, at which point a dialog box with a message will display: "The file transfer was successful. Please wait while the CA3 is reprogrammed and then resets". Click OK.
The CA3 Display Indicator Lights flashes in sequence while the new firmware is installed. When the installation is complete, the lights stop flashing. The entire transfer and installation process takes less than 4 minutes.
Click the Exit icon button on the right to exit the Toolkit.
After updating the CA3 firmware, you should be able to use the CA3 with your software applications.
